Friction
Ypsilanti, MI (1998-2002)
Matt Flemming - Vocals, Guitar Though I can remember Matt Carter and Eric playing music way back in the day, I think that I would have to say that Friction started up officially sometime in 1998. The original members were J. Calhoun, Jason Craiger, Eric Cargile and Matt Carter. I remember playing a lot of outdoor shows with them, Levulös and DROP during the summer of 1998. This was the line-up for almost a year before the band took on a fifth member, Josh Colvin. It was during this time that the band was playing Mr. Mugs coffee shop a lot in downtown Ypsilanti. It was during this time that Jason left the band, and was replaced by Matt Flemming (who had been singing and playing guitar in a number of bands before this.) read more
During this period they recorded the 4 song Friction cassette tape, which I believe was actually the second tape they had. The first being a 4-track recording, perhaps. Over the next year J. had left the band and Matt Flemming stepped up to the position of singer. Also, during this time Steve (the owner of Mr. Mugs coffee shop) moved from his small coffee shop location to a larger space down the street to accommodate the volume of people showing up to see the bands perform. Over the next few years Friction released a few other albums, and used to pack the new Muggs on a weekend. Ryan Hampton joined on as guitarist in 2001(?), after Nobodys Heroes ended. This was the line-up all the way through 2002 when the band signed to Selah Records. The band was forced to surrender the name Friction, and this is when Bloodlined Calligraphy was born. |
